IPL 2014 auction is set to take place in Bangalore on 12th and 13th, February 2014. When the IPL was initially launched in 2008, it was decided that all players will go under the hammer for IPL season 7. But due to the fact that many players have created some sort of legacy with ipl fans and franchises, and to enable the continuity of core players in IPL teams, IPL governing council decided to allow the franchises to retain up to 5 players for IPL 2014 as well. This decision was taken during a 2 day workshop for all IPL franchises which was held in Singapore earlier in November 28 and 29.
January 10th, 2014 was the last date for the IPL franchises to announce the list of players retained by them ahead of IPL 2014 players auction. Only chennai super kings, Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have retained the fullw quota of five players. Other franchises have chosen to retain less than five players with Delhi Daredevils not at all retaining any of the players including the star batsman Virender Sehwag.
Each franchise will have an option to exercise one right to match card (RTM card), which means when a player goes for the auction and about to be bought by another franchise, the home franchise has the right to match the auction fee agreed and buy the player for their team. So eventually each franchises can retain up to 6 players in total including the one player thru RTM card.
